Mark your calendars, because the monthly Blue moon is set to make stage on October 31, 2020.
It is a common to think Blue moon means a literal Blue coloured moon, but that’s not the case.
Blue moon – The 2nd full moon to occur on a single calendar month.
The previous Blue moon occurred on July 31, 2015; January 31, 2018; and March 31, 2018 subsequently.
There is also a seasonal blue moon, the third of the four full moons in a single season.
The whole idea or concept of a Blue Moon as the 2nd full moon in a month originated from the Sky and Telescope magazine, on the March 1946 issue. This issue carried an article called Once in a Blue Moon by James Hugh Pruett. Pruett in this article was referring to the 1937 Maine Farmer’s Almanac. Here’s what he wrote
“Seven times in 19 years there were – and still are – 13 full moons in a year. This gives 11 months with one full moon each and one with two. This second in a month, so I interpret it, was called Blue Moon.”James Hugh Pruett
Halloween Blue moon – 2020
Coincidentally, the upcoming Blue moon falls on the same day as Halloween.
For those of you from not familiar with the festival of Halloween, falls on a day before the All saint’s day (November 1). It is an ancient tradition that originated the ancient Celtic festival ‘the Samhain’, where people would dress up in costumes and light a bonfire to ward off ghosts. It was known as All Hallows Eve, which went through changes and transformed into what we know today as Halloween. As time went on the activities like Trick-or-treating, carving pumpkins as Jack-o-lanterns, kids costumes, and many other fun events we added to it.
This Blue moon would get better news and media coverage thanks to the Halloween day. I bet a related Hashtag would trend on twitter around the days. This would be mainly because people would just read the headlines and jump in to share their thoughts or appreciation.
Misinformation on social media
You can find people posting moon photos that appear in Blue color. You should know that it is either a color filter or the image has been PhotoShop. This stems from people just reading the title of articles and news and filling in the rest by taking it in a literal sense.
Even when you type Blue moon in Google image results, you can find a plethora of such edited images.
But it is not impossible to see a blue moon. There have been some sightings of actual blue colored moon in the night skies. Since the full moon mostly appear in yellow, orange, white and sometimes with a slight shade of blue.
Upcoming Blue moons
As seen previously in the article the upcoming Blue moon in on the 31st of October this year 2020. The first full moon preceding this fell on the 1st and 2nd of October.
The upcoming seasonal Blue Moon will fall on August 22 of 2021.
It is even more rare to witness a seasonal blue moon and a monthly blue moon occur in a single calendar year. However, this type of event is set to occur next in the year 2048, when and a seasonal Blue Moon would occur on August 23rd and before that a monthly Blue Moon would occur on January 31st the same year.
This would again be repeated in the year 2067. But by that time, I think people would have colonized the moon and there would be metropolitan lunar cities. – Kingson S
